Tea in seven acts

Act 7:  It is here, in the final act, that you cup the bowl in your left palm while your right hand secures it gently in place.  Sip the cold, vivid green tea softened with a splash of fatty raw milk.  Give it your attention.  Feel how it cools your core.  Let the drinking refocus you.  Take note as it slowly imbues a particular clarity.  By the time you’ve set the bowl down and carefully washed the utensils, you will find yourself invested with a renewed ambition that will carry you through the late summer afternoon.

Act 1:  Set 2 teaspoons of green tea powder into a pouring vessel and wet the whisk.

Act 2:  Pour boiled water, as much as you might like to drink, over the powdered tea.

Act 3:  Whisk in an up and down motion, as if repeatedly writing the number 1.

Act 4:  Choose a bowl with an open rim and a foot that feels good in the palm.  Arrange in it a few nuggets of ice.

Act 5: Pour the frothed tea over the ice into the bowl.

Interlude

Act 6:  Add a splash of cool milk.  Fatty whole milk smooths and rounds the acidic tea, adding a fullness of body and a richness in taste.
